Chapter 6

George

The jealousy on Izzy’s face lights up like a neon billboard. My dick goes hard because I’m a desperate dick, but I know her jealousy is a bad thing, so I lift Nina off me right away. Nina squeals with delight, mistaking my hold on her for something it’s not, no doubt. Izzy’s nostrils flare and she looks away, her whole body violently turning as she lies back in her lounge chair. Jack and Ben float in on their Jet Skis on the other side of the dock.

“You need to cool off, Nina,” I say loud and clear, though I whisper in her ear an apology as I lift her into the air and toss her over the side of the boat into the water. Predictably, she screams and sputters in outrage when she surfaces. The guys shout in surprise and amusement, but the laughter has an edge of nerves, because they know my purpose wasn’t fun. They’re right. It wasn’t. I wasn’t fooling around. I was sending a message to Nina and to Izzy. Not sure if either of them got it.

Climbing out of the boat, I head straight for Izzy, who’s laid out in a lounge chair pretending to relax and soak in the sun. But I notice the tense grip she has on the side of the chair and I know her eyes track me from behind the dark sunglasses. Nerves zip through me, and I can’t get rid of that stoked feeling that she’s so jealous of Nina. Only a small pathetic part of me feels that way though, since I know having Nina sit on my lap makes me look like the easy player Izzy thinks I am.

I comb my fingers through my wet hair. What the hell was I doing letting Nina sit on my lap? Honestly, it felt like no big deal when we were out on the water. She ended up there after the boat went over a high wake and thumped down into the trough. Then Nina did the same, so to speak.

Fuck. It’s not the kind of explanation I can tell Izzy and impress her. She’ll read casual fuckboy into that all the way. Maybe she’s right—sort of. I still have a lot of bad habits to unlearn, maybe some new things to get right. The idea that I’m not interested in an easy lay is still strange even after all these months, but real. Too fucking real and with the clock expiring on our time at SPU, I don’t exactly know how to handle it anymore.

All I know is I want to handle Izzy. Only Izzy. And I don’t want to leave here without knowing when I’m going to see her again. It’s a start.

“Can I sit down?” I say as I sit on the edge of her lounge chair, forcing her to move her legs. She says nothing and Dooley looks me up and down like he’s a tailor estimating my shirt size. Or maybe like a friend who doesn’t appreciate me disrespecting Izzy.
